Standing Orders Committee (SOC) and told that we had
double check all the constitutions of all the liberation
groups again and ensure that the constitution of GPEW was
being followed. It was told to us that until we had done so,
none of the liberation groups could be considered as duly
recognised by the E&D Committee and that this meant the
liberation groups could not hold discussions with the E&D
Committee nor vote.
This new action by SOC is particularly concerning as a
number of liberation groups were advised by members
of SOC or through members of SOC to amend their
constitutions in order to prepare for the Holistic Review.
Those liberation groups who followed that advice are now
being considered as being unconstitutional.
From liberation groups’ points of view, either there is
a move amongst the GPEW leadership to somehow
temporarily silence some liberation groups, particularly
during this period of elections, or the left hand of GPEW
does not know what the right hand is doing. Once again,
there is conflicting messages from the GPEW leadership.
Nevertheless, the E&D Committee has completed the task
requested by SOC and found the following committees
have constitutions which meet the GPEW Constitution:
• Jewish Greens
• Greens of Colour
• Green Left
• Green Party Trade Union Group
• LGBTIQA+ Greens
• Disability Group
In the meantime, the E&D Committee is working closely
with Green Women, Greens for Animal Protection and
Green Seniors to ensure that they meet the requirements
and can be duly recognised in due course.
The term of the current E&D Committee started after a
three-year gap of silence around E&D issues within GPEW.
It would appear that the one-year term of the current E&D
Committee is ending amidst the silencing of liberation
groups, which is very concerning- particularly as this
coincides with crucial GPEW leadership elections.
Six years after being called out nationally for being less
diverse than UKIP, in 2021, the key question arising from
E&D is what has the GPEW actually done to change this
woeful situation?
