Dyer & Butler has been awarded the main
works contract for the Eclipse Busway Project,
improving access to Fareham and Gosport.
The Eclipse Busway provides a priority public transport route
connecting Fareham to Gosport, and Dyer & Butler will be
responsible for the infrastructure works to build a new 900m
busway, with associated footway and cycle way.
The existing route, completed in 2012, is largely off-road with a
dedicated section following the line of a former railway. The
900m extension will follow a disused railway corridor and form
one component of a wider package of measures designed to
improve access to Fareham and Gosport. Works commenced
in June 2020 with completion expected in May 2022.
The scheme was awarded to Dyer & Butler under the
Hampshire Generation 3 Civil Engineering, Highways and
Transportation Infrastructure Works Framework. Dyer & Butler
has been supporting Hampshire County Council (HCC) for
many years and is committed to providing its continued support
to ensure Hampshire County Council achieves its objectives.
The scheme objectives are:
•To reduce journey time delay and peak hour congestion
on and off the Gosport peninsula
•To reduce the transport barriers to growth and encourage
investment and regeneration on the peninsula
•To improve connectivity and provide additional network
resilience across the peninsula
“
We are delighted to have been awarded
this project that will deliver significant
benefits to the area. Approximately 2.4
million journeys are made each year on
the busway, making it Hampshire’s
busiest bus corridor. This investment will
ensure improved connectivity and
network resilience across the Gosport
peninsula, as well as reducing journey
times and peak hour congestion on and
off the peninsula.

DYER & BUTLER
APPOINTED TO
DELIVER £3.7M
ECLIPSE BUSWAY
PROJECT IN GOSPORT
Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County
Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and
Environment, said: “I’m excited that the scheme is getting off
the ground and am pleased that we have appointed Dyer &
Butler to deliver this important project on the County Council’s
behalf. The 900m of new busway aims to further improve
journey times and access to the successful Eclipse services.
We have listened to the local community and worked with our
partners to secure planning permission and funding for this
much needed addition which will retain the segregation for
cyclists and pedestrians at Rowner Road Bridge.”
“We have made a commitment to the people of South
Hampshire to improve traffic and travel in the wider area. This
capital investment will, in the long term, assist local
businesses by increasing connectivity and improve the travel
options for everyone in and out of the Gosport peninsula.”
Once complete, the Eclipse service operator First Hampshire
and Dorset will invest in a fleet of 17 new high-specification,
low-emission buses and introduce a new Eclipse Extra service
to the nearby Daedalus Enterprise Zone. The renewal of the
bus fleet will also reduce emissions to help address known air
quality issues in the Fareham Air Quality Management Area.
The programme of works will require the diversion of existing
foot and cycle ways and associated infrastructure of 900m of
surface water drainage attenuation, a pumping station, a
directional drilled pumping main, retaining wall structures tied
into engineered fill, bus stops and shelters, access control
barriers and a traffic signal-controlled junction.
