DYER & BUTLER CREATE ACOUSTIC
ENCLOSURE TO REDUCE EXCESSIVE
NOISE LEVELS
The Dyer & Butler project team working
within the historic Smithfield Market in
Central London has recently come up
with an innovative solution to reduce
excessive noise levels. The works
required the breaking out of substantial
areas of concrete within the building
which have caused excessive noise.
Carrying out the works on behalf of The City of London Corporation,
the project team’s solution was to design and construct a portable
acoustic scaffold enclosure on wheels which covered the excavator,
allowing it to manoeuvre freely to break out these large areas of
concrete. The enclosure is fitted with temporary lighting, a ventilation
unit and a viewing panel and achieved a huge reduction in noise levels
from 90dB to 20dB.
The team’s ingenuity made a real positive impact to the health and
wellbeing of the operatives working inside the building and a
third-party contractor working closely alongside, as well as eliminating
disturbance to the local businesses, residents and market traders.
