The Jewel and the rst Word
How much is instructions and how much self discovery?
It’s an interesting question.
First of all the teachings are a signpost. From where we are, all the way to an
apparently distant destination.
Then comes the putting into practice, a sense of technique, a sense of application.
The practice is the walking. Through the forest perhaps. The floor covered with
pine needles. Bright things to the left and right. Little animals with bright eyes
that watch us in the dark. Strange noises and calling voices. Sometimes it feels
like jealous minds. As if no one wants us to get through. Distractions. Calls to
pleasure. Little birds that have fallen from the trees. Everyday boredom. A
roadside shack with food and leisure and something ripe and charged with
temptation. It’s all profoundly sensual.
There are places here where we can get stuck for years.
But we have a lamplight. The lamp is our intelligence. And we have our Friend.
Our intelligence is our own natural spark that wants to press on and find the sea.
The great eternal sea.
So what do we reckon? 40/60. Teaching to intelligence?
Do we get to see the beacon light at the top of the hill? Not really. Not at first.
Maybe we got a flash of it at the very beginning. A direct introduction into the
Natural state of being.
