DARK WAS THE NIGHT and COLD WAS THE GROUND
(Kevin de Las Casas/Blind Willie Johnson)
Dark was the night and cold was the ground,
they have taken my sweet Lord,
and they lay Him gently down...
His body is broken but His Soul will carry on....
to the arms of the Father,
carry on.... carry on....
Dark was the night and cold was the ground,
the earth red and bleeding,
no redemption to be found....
How could ever such beauty and love be so denied?
All for fear and for wonder,
bow your head down and cry.
The original by Blind Willie Johnson is outstanding. It is one of the most
atmospheric and moving pieces of music I ever heard. A recording of this was
one of the pieces that was sent out into space on the Voyager capsule, an
ambassador ship to unknown civilizations.
Blind Willie’s song had no lyrics. Its just slide guitar and some vocalization. The
words on this version are mine while riding on his inspiration. We do this song
as a slow lament and it is powerful.
