scheduled for Whitehorse, capital
city of the Yukon. Lessons will
have been learnt on the road
from Anchorage and many
a minor modification will be
carried out to prepare for the
road ahead.
While distances are
great in the far north, and
accommodation not easy to find,
the asphalt roads are fast, empty,
and flowing, with big distances
covered each day. There is an
abundance of gravel tracks
around and, coupled with the
interesting topography, we aim
to find enough competitive loops
off the main highways to keep
you entertained without delaying
onward progress.
We begin in Gold Rush country
surrounded by snowy peaks with
old mining outposts dotting the
vast expanse of America’s last
frontier. Crossing into Canada we
snake south, and the temperature
starts to rise, high mountain
views give way to vineyards and
lush pastures as we find ourselves
in British Columbia’s wine country
around Osoyoos. The well-earned
rest day there will see car fettling
and no doubt a tasting or two.
Mainland USA
Days 20 to 23: Moab, UT to
Palm Springs, CA
Days 12 to 18: Osoyoos, BC to
Moab, UT
As the next sector of our
adventure begins, we will
be relishing the huge skies,
incredible sunrises, and warm
desert air. Abundant sunshine
and hotter temperatures
encourage us to set out each
morning at first light to take
advantage of cooler weather
and spectacular sunsets
enjoyed in increasingly
glamorous hotel pools with a
cocktail in hand.
Four more states in five days
see us exploring the absolute
best of the Colorado Rockies,
New Mexico and it’s rich and
quirky arts culture, Arizona and
its incredible desert geology,
and finally the Golden State,
California. Incredible desert and
gravel tracks promise intense
competition in the most unreal
and picturesque of surroundings
and quirky, friendly desert towns
will welcome us for refreshments
and exploration.
Our final rest day is in the
fashionable, all-year desert
resort city of Palm Springs. Pack
your fashionable fifties clothes
because the cocktails will be
flowing.
The seven-day section that takes
us to our next rest day will show
us a great evolution in scenery
and temperature, alongside
great competition, with several
outstanding regularities and a few
tests designed to challenge driver
and navigator alike. Washington
State has Pacific rainforests, alpine
scenery, mountains and wineries
while Oregon and Idaho have more
of the same, but in more intimate
and welcoming small towns.
As we journey south, the
climate becomes more arid, and
race and speedways become more
frequent alongside an abundance
of gravel roads to keep us
occupied. It’s when we hit Nevada
that the sky gets bigger, sandy and
rugged desert vistas dominate, and
when we hit neighbouring Utah,
we’re in full high desert country
with its canyons and indescribable
red rock formations.
The rest day city of Moab is
the gateway to the Canyonlands
National Park, surrounded by
dramatic scenery. The city itself
is packed with great bars and
restaurants, and there’s lots
to see and do in the area in a
delightfully relaxed ambience.
