Another great day of endurance rallying was made
even better with an extra few minutes in bed.
The organisers were forced to cancel the second
regularity due to circumstances beyond their
control. So, with a little rescheduling, everyone got
a little more shut eye.
enthusiastic group of volunteers are still working on the
restoration of the building. Some of the upper floors have
been used as film sets for various period productions.
Unfortunately, Stan Gold and Brant parsons’ porsche had
to retire after lunch with a suspected hole in a piston. The
crew are hoping to join the rally for the final evening in Cabo.
from lunch it was an easy run into Tucson and, with a rest
day looming, we were able to celebrate both Manuel dubs’s
birthday, and his and Irene’s 25th wedding anniversary.
never let it be said that the Swiss don’t know how to throw
a party. we’d like to thank them for their generosity. There
were also a few sad farewells, and an equal number of
excited hellos, as crews made changes for the last leg of the
rally into Mexico.
The drive to the first regularity alongside Mormon lake - the
largest in Arizona – and then through Coconino forest, took
us right back to the woodlands of British Columbia, save
for the fact it was 15°c warmer and thankfully, there was no
smoke hanging in the air. dr John llewellyn and Jim Smith
were waiting with their clocks at the start of this section
along the suitably named fire Control road. They whiled
away the time between cars examining the many and varied
miniature cacti, which had taken root in the undergrowth, a
sign of bigger things to come.
with the Cactus Butte regularity given the boot and no
clock ticking away, we had the opportunty to enjoy the
scenery. Huge succulents clung to the rocky slopes that
highlighted we were at the beginning of the hotter section
of the rally.
Stopping at the city of Globe for lunch seemed fitting for
an outfit dedicated to rallying it. The settlement sprung up
in the 1870s and once boomed as a copper mining hub.
Many of the old buildings in the centre have been preserved,
including the railway station which hosted the buffet. An
