Day 24 Tucson Rest Day
20 September 2023
Some crews ventured out early to beat the heat, whilst others
lingered over a superb buffet breakfast. By mid-morning the
car park is full of drivers, navigators and sweep crews busy
with matters of adjustment, lubrication and maintenance.
The all-American Cadillac of Jim Gately - who has now
rejoined the rally for the final leg through Mexico - was
being treated to a new set of wheel bearings. navigator

Blunden’s Holden was having a troublesome handbrake
cable adjusted. John pyle was assisting the experts checking
and finessing his Chevrolet’s steering and suspension after
its off-road excursion a few days ago.
A few spots of midday rain - the first in some time did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm. It did provide
a good opportunity to duck indoors and get online for
anyone needing to do a last-minute visa application before
tomorrow’s crossing into Mexico.
for the rest of the day the crews were free to explore
Tucson and its surroundings. Some took the opportunity to
get up close and personal with some of the area’s famous
fleshy succulents, at the Arizona-Sonora desert Museum.
Tomorrow, after two Tests, we depart the United States of
America and head for the United Mexican States - one of the
world’s cradles of civilisation - where, undoubtedly, more
adventure awaits.

The Hacienda del Sol hotel is excellent rest day
accommodation, with views over the city of Tucson
on one side and the looming foothills of Mount
lemmon on the other. An impressive array of cacti
loom over the cars as the oily business began.
