day 25: Tucson to Puerto Peñasco, 21 September 2023
Sadly, roy and rachel Stephenson didn’t get this far,
they were forced to make a pit stop to have their Mustang’s
clutch bearing replaced. The crew are hopeful that repairs
will only cost them a day’s rallying, enabling them to catch
up with the rest of us in San felipe.
next we began our trek towards the border through
the organ pipe Cactus national Monument. The frontier
formalities were swiftly dealt with. As the ink dried on
the visa stamps, there was an easy run through the Gran
desierto de Altar towards puerto peñasco, tucked away at
the top end of the Sea of Cortez. This is a holiday town,
which fits right in with the current vibe of the rally. After
almost four weeks on the road, the crews can sense the
finish line and a lavish dinner on the beach served to whet
their appetite for the last few days.

Two Tests in quick succession got the day’s competition
started; firstly the Musselman Honda Circuit put a bit of
warmth into the tyres over two tight laps of a good quality
kart track. This was followed by two laps of the nASCAr
Tucson Speedway, which gave us a tantalising taste of US
motorsport. our polymathic, sweep turned pundit, owen
Turner, provided a witty running commentary from the
box as the cars thundered along the well-maintained oval.
A rougher road led us to a passage Control in the
settlement of Ko Vaya, which in 2010, had a population of
just 46. our arrival swelled their numbers, but we didn’t
hang around long enough to be counted as we pressed on
towards the lunch and Time Control in why.
