we were unaccustomed to the damp chill in the air this morning, which came courtesy of a sea fret that
had settled upon the town overnight. As we rolled out of the hotel and into the pacific mist, many of the
crews were wondering where exactly they had packed their warm clothing.

There was only one regularity to challenge the crews today,
as well as an amazing west to east crossing of the Baja
peninsula. Unfortunately, Gerd Buehler’s big Mercedes broke
down yesterday and won’t be going any further. According
to Andy Inskip who, along with Charlie neale towed the car
to a garage, a small oil leak had turned into a big oil leak and
the engine had seized.
for the rest of us, first up was the Benito Juárez regularity
that was run over a rough and sandy set of tracks, with a
couple of timing points tucked away in the scrub. After
4.5km Gill and John Cotton supplied each crew with the ideal
target time. The cars then set off on a cross-country odyssey
through the rugged beauty of the el Vizcaíno Biosphere
reserve and towards the lunch Time Control at the Mulege
Brew Company. This was a fantastically bohemian affair,
complete with live music, plenty of shade, great food and
drink, plus a detachment of police to keep the traffic flowing
in and out of the car park.
once we’d finished with our pasta salads, the rest of the
afternoon was taken up driving the stunning corniche road
alongside the Gulf of California. we rolled past countless
remote beaches and rustic guest houses, with thickets of
