set a new altitude record for the event so far at a dizzying
1909m over the Sierra de Villafranca. There was more than
20km of mountain for us to enjoy before the run straight into
the Salamanca night halt and an unexpected treat.
It’s his birthday today, and Dieter Baumhaeckel requested
that we celebrate in “true Rally the Globe style” with a gin
and tonic on the bonnet™ party. So, the popular zahnartz
rang ahead and laid on quite the car park reception to
ease us into the weekend with his wife Hilla slicing lemons
with what can only be described as surgical precision. As
designated bar tenders Mark Appleton and Loren Price’s
approach to the Weights and Measures Act was definitely
on the generous side of precise although, as we went to
press, no complaints had been received.
Brian and John Caudwell were almost late to the party
as they had their own peculiar liquidity issue to deal with
on the way down the hill. They were forced to stop and
refill the Jag’s radiator because “she runs a bit hot up the
hills and right now she’s very thirsty”. Andy Inskip and
Charlie Neale arrived just as the last few drops were being
administered and soon they were on their way again.
With such a hullabaloo around the MTC, some crews were
in danger of missing their due time having been ambushed
by a G&T. The ever pragmatic Rikki Proffitt came to the
rescue by becoming a mobile MTC. With a control board
strapped to his arm and a set of clocks in his hands Rikki
made sure that everyone made the cut.
Tomorrow is a rest day with the opportunity of an extra
few minutes in bed so, tonight, some of the crews took the
opportunity to see a little more of Salamanca and what it
offers after dark.
