A rest day is a chance to kick back and relax, get
some laundry done or perhaps, more likely, fix
the car.
So, with this latter option firmly to the fore, the sweeps
were on duty in the car park at 9am sharp with spanners
at the ready. Thankfully, there was nothing serious to deal
with. The most impressive job involved the big Bentley
of car 16, Dirk Van Lerberghe and Hilde Vanhove, whose
brakes needed some more attention. Dirk admitted that
with the wheels off he could see the problem, but wasn’t
able to fix it without the help of Andy Inskip, who expertly
tightened, sanded and readjusted the drums, shoes and
return springs. If this big old beast doesn’t stop on a
sixpence tomorrow then it’s not for want of trying.
Bill Holroyd, in another Bentley, was wrestling with the
business end of a grease gun but managed to find time
to lend a hand to Peter Morton who was looking to see
whether a knocking sound from his Rover’s suspension
was anything to worry about. This is a big beast of a car,
a 3500 V8 no less and they chose it because they wanted
something a bit different and recalled that Peter’s father
had also owned two Rovers.
Adrian Hodgson told us he was off to the cathedral this
afternoon to give thanks for a minor miracle which had
