After the sun-soaked smash hit that was the
Generations Rally, we find ourselves this weekend
in Barcelona, Spain for the Carrera España.
The organising team could be forgiven for wondering
whether, with this event, they would be facing that difficult
second album situation. The first rally of 2022, Generations,
was an instant classic, but had it left such an indelible mark
on peoples’ consciousness, that the second one had to be
as good, if not better, to cement its place at the top of the
hit parade?
This time the songwriter and producer is Fred Gallagher
- who designed the route - with Mark Appleton taking on
the role of sound engineer and mixing desk supremo. And,
like other famous musical partnerships such as Lennon
and McCartney, Andersson and Ulvaeus and the Pet Shop
Boys, Appleton and Gallagher have naturally drawn on a
variety of influences for their new release. Garage, drill,
heavy metal and grime featuring prominently alongside
some light hip hop, as a nod to the absent David Roberts.
The rally HQ, and our home for the night, is the
impressive Miramar Hotel set at the top of the old Montjuic
motor racing circuit, which offered up its lofty balcony for
us and, as usual the day before a rally starts, the car park
