Once the crews had recovered their composure, and any
problems had been dealt with, the rally cars were parked
up and the time cards handed to Andrew Kellitt and
Audrey Rudd manning the MTC. A swift tour of the very
well endowed Alonso museum was followed by a different
type of challenge. A kart race had been scheduled with
two, 20 lap, qualifying sessions, and a final to decide the
Carrera España single seat championship.
This was going to be a tough crown to take and whilst
a few well know trackmeisters put in some bravura
performances, once the chequered flag dropped it was the
Organisers very own dark horse, super sweep Russ Smith,
who came out on top. Fresh from dealing with a flaming
Escort, Russ managed to light up the track and smoke the
opposition, before changing back into his overalls and
making sure that Manuel Dubs and his engine mounts were
sorted for the journey to the hotel.
Lunch was the final thing to deal with at the Circuito
Fernando Alonso, ahead of the short drive to the night
halt. The elegant, and well appointed, Eurostars de La
Reconquista hotel in the heart of downtown Oviedo, saw
the crews in fine fettle with the bittersweet emotions of
pride at coming to the end of the rally, tinged with sadness,
for exactly the same reason.
We have two birthdays to celebrate today, Mark Bramall,
who’s navigating for Adrian Hodgson, and Rally the
Globe team member Rikki Proffitt, who’s driving for Mark
Appleton. We don’t know if Adrian managed to buy a
present for Mark today, but we do know that both crew
members would love to move up one, to top spot in the
Classics category. However, for that to happen “Tina
Beardshaw needs to make a mistake on a Regularity” …
and, given that we’re into the end game now, “that’s not
very likely”.
