Day 1
Barcelona to La Seu d’Urgell (310 km)
As Montserrat Caballé herself might have said,
today Barcelona dawned like a jewel in the sun.
And, with 30 hungry crews keen to get on with
things, the breakfast buffet overlooking the
Mediterranean did a brisk trade. From the moment
the sun was up the coffee machine was working as
hard as the waiting staff.

People were obviously keen to get going. Lounging about
in the lap of luxury is all well and good but, when there is
a car park full of old cars to play with and Spain is your
playground, then it’s simply a question of priorities. In
keeping with the Carrera ethos of a more civilised approach
to life, the start was scheduled for 8.30am, whereupon Fred
Gallagher waved his Rojigualda and sent the cars under the
arch and down the hill.
