Brake adjustments were required today for Dirk Van Lerberghe and

Beat Erni and Barbara Mahrenholz’s Sunbeam Alpine
had endured a slightly difficult day. The morning section
caused it to overheat and whilst they admitted that “she’s
a very pretty car,” at the moment “it’s not behaving very
well”. And, as if to prove this point the little red rocket
then developed a fuel pump fault almost within sight of
the days end. The sweep crew of Andy Inskip and Charlie
Neale were soon on the scene and, thanks to their efforts,
the two Swiss and their Sunbeam made the Time Control
with a minute and a half to spare.
Dirk Van Lerberghe and Hilde Vanhove’s Bentley Speed 8
had enjoyed a timely brake adjustment whilst they waited
for their lunch, ensuring the big beast had a trouble free
run for the rest of the day. Brian and John Caudwell’s
Jaguar SS 100 needed more serious work though. An
electrical issue had dogged them all morning but, after a
few minutes with Russ Smith and Jack Amies who rewired
the ignition system, the big cat was purring along nicely
and they too reached the MTC albeit with only a mere three
minutes in hand.
Mike and Jonathan McKenna are still perhaps a little
frustrated that their first choice of car, a Triumph TR6,
had to sit out the event, but they’re thoroughly enjoying
its replacement, an Aston Martin DB7, and offered that the
morning’s drive took place over “one of the best roads I’ve
ever driven. Well surfaced and with some stunning views”.
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
