for a quick, hands-free, temperature check of the crews
as they pulled up in the car park. Bob Hargreaves and
Graham Rood checked engines for noise compliance, with
Rikki Proffitt and Jim Smith on hand with buckets of soapy
water, sponges and squeegees to help the crews fix the
number roundels and rally plates to their bodywork.
A little further down the line Motorsport UK scrutineers
Colin Wallace and Willie Greig, were ensuring both safety
and compliance, with sweep crews, Andy Inskip, Jack Amies,
Charlie Neale and Geoff Lobb making themselves available
to sort any arising issues. Once the vehicles and crews were
passed fit it was off indoors to the signing on desk, staffed
by Loren Price, Gill Cotton, Marcus Rowe and Liz Atkinson
who, as well as checking that the paperwork was correct,
handed out road books, time cards, maps and gift bags.
There was some time allowed for lunch, or a leisurely
walk along the low lying coastal links footpaths to
better appreciate the charm of this corner of Fife. It was
fitting though, that in this ancient university town, there
also appeared to be plenty of studying going on. Road
books, maps and time schedules were pored over and a
navigational seminar, led by Gill Cotton, was scheduled for
anyone unsure of what it all meant.
A briefing from Fred Gallagher and Mark Appleton
touched upon some day-to-day practicalities of the coming
event, before the rally adjourned to a drinks reception and
a fine Scottish dinner.
Graham and Marina Goodwin just squeaked in before the
starter was served, having had a frustrating day sorting and
waiting for an alternative car to be delivered. Their Bentley
Corsica had suffered a fractured oil pipe on yesterday’s
drive north and was substituted for something a little more
match fit.
