again, but not before Denis had walked up the road with
his empty jerrycan and refilled it with the last of his local
currency before the border. Very resourceful.
The border itself was a dream, no more than 30 mins from
start to finish thanks to some behind the scenes help from
CARS UK. This ensured our arrival at the night halt in plenty
of time to enjoy the party marking the penultimate night.
Held in the car park of the Taita Hills Resort, we were joined
by Philip, Anthony and Mrumbo of the Teita Estate, who
have promised us a spectacular day of rallying tomorrow.
They tell us that the grader is working overtime this evening
crewed by the only female grader driver in Kenya and that
she’s left no speed bump un-flattened.
Charlie Neale stepped up as barman extraordinaire and,
very quickly, drained several bottles of gin and vodka,
a few crates of tonic, a case of wine and a barrel of beer.
Today’s drive obviously had been a thirsty one so, before
dinner and cocktails, and while he still could, Fred Gallagher
stood up and addressed the rally. From a pulpit atop his
LandCruiser Prado he thanked everyone for their endurance
and enthusiasm over the last three weeks. He also gave a
few tantalising hints about tomorrow which gave rise to
excitement and anxiety in almost equal measure.
Lars Rolner then took over the top spot to praise the
sweeps and the rest of the Rally the Globe team for their
hard work throughout the event before dinner was served
and the rain started to fall... again.
