what he and Norah had achieved over the last three weeks
and he told us that “to take this win means such a lot,
because it’s our first ever endurance rally win. And we did
it because I’ve got the best navigator”.
“A Bentley’s power to weight ratio is all power and lots of
weight” he continued “and knowing how to control these
two forces is what makes the difference”.
Lars Rolner was also a happy man and reported that
his car, much lighter than a Bentley, had been terrific
throughout. “There was much more rain than we’d expected,
which in turn led to some terrible road conditions, but we
suffered no real problems”.
“I’m lucky to have a great navigator and I’m happy to be
here on the podium and not in the divorce courts”.
“Kenya is a beautiful country with great hospitality and
the smiles we’ve seen along the road will stay with us for
a long time”.
As well as the class winners and the overall awards,
there were some discretionary prizes given. The Spirit of
the Rally prize going to two crews, Federica Mascetti and
Enrico Paggi and Denis and Jill Wilson, for their unfailing
good humour and fun throughout.
Against all odds was taken by Dieter and Hildegard
Baumhäeckel for their efforts in keeping the Volvo on the
road despite its ongoing suspension problems.
With the dinner cleared away, and despite being tired,
the rally just kept taking the medicine and, miraculously,
some were able to make it through into the small hours.
