followed and led to the last Section of today. From Ugine,
we took on the 870m Col de la Forclaz, shooting through
a thick canopy of trees with just the occasional glimpse of
the Chaine de Aravis through the rear view mirror.
A Time Control in Beaufort gave the crews an opportunity
to stretch their legs and enjoy some of the region’s finest

eight days after our last turophilic encounter, Jim Smith
and Graham Rood had set up shop in a classic Citroën
van to distribute a selection of Beaufortain specialities.
Summer and winter cheeses were on offer as well as
thin slices of dry sausage; all washed down with a glass
of locally produced apple juice. A visitors centre and
interactive exhibition next door showed us how these

cheeses were made and, as Alison Lewin observed, perhaps

Sadly at this juncture the 48 hour car of Dick Appleton
and Chris Mills delivered the news that we’d have to turn
ourselves around and begin a re-route to the night halt.
A huge land slip and collapsed road over the Cormet de
Roselend had left us with no option. As the crews headed
towards the Ecrin Blanc in Courchevel, through a very
wet Tarentaise Valley, no one was too disappointed. After
making it through such an epic day we all felt like winners
as we enjoyed welcome drinks in the lobby followed by
a fine dinner. And, at 1300m, some good old fashioned
mountain air ensured that everyone would sleep soundly
tonight, despite the cheese…
