Day 1: Northern Lakes, 25 March 2022
Steve and Alex Chick, 1959 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk I
of our crews from previous events who had turned out to
lend a hand and run some of the controls. Many thanks to
Ean and Alison Lewin, and Mike and Lorna Harrison.
There were also two Tests set for the afternoon - at the
kart track in Rowrah, where a little rowdiness seemed to be
the order of the day if the squealing tyres and screaming
engines were anything to go by, before the rally set off on
an easy road section via Cockermouth and Bassenthwaite
to the final long Regularity through the Caldbeck Fells. On
a day which had by any definition been a real cracker, this
final sun drenched and expansive section however could
easily be described as being the cherry on a very well iced
cake.
Our friends from the Ilkley Motor Club saw to the timings
through Caldbeck and, once the crews had passed through
their final control, all that stood in the way of the rally and
some well deserved Low Wood refreshments, was the epic
drive alongside Ullswater, through Patterdale and over the
Kirkstone Pass.
It was therefore a tired but excited rally which sat down
to dinner this evening, perhaps proving the old adage that
‘families who play together, stay together’. Whether this
will still hold true when the results are published though
remains to be seen.
