Manuel thought was a respectable position to that of an
also ran. The Swiss pair were philosophical about this once
they’d crossed the finish line. And, displaying a remarkable
command of the grittier side of the English language, rookie
navigator Luca declared that “It’s been a great weekend but
unfortunately, I f***ed up on the last day. I’ve learned from
it though and will do better next time”.
The second Regularity around Cartmel Fell, famous for
its horse racing, offered the chance of redemption despite
a felled tree causing some routing (no pun intended)
difficulties for the Organisers. This saw some crews forced
into an early visit to the Time Control in the Lakeland Motor
Museum at Backbarrow where they were offered coffee, tea
(and perhaps a little sympathy) if it was required.
There was a head of steam building now and the rally
could scent the finish line, but there was still the third
Regularity at Woodland Fell to deal with. Situated to the
south west of Coniston Water this was another map based
section which, once again, required the crews to navigate
the shortest distance between three timing points set
in a very broken landscape. When they finally emerged
from the woods the timing eased a little for crossings of
the “terrible twins” Hardknott and Wrynose Pass and the
beautiful Langdale Valley via three passage controls before
the triumphant procession to Low Wood and the finish
line. Here Fred Gallagher was on hand with his flag to see
everyone safely under the arch before the winners were
declared.
Andrew Kellit and Audrey Rudd, the unseen and often
unsung heroes of the results team, had diligently read the
time cards and crunched the numbers. They showed that
the Vintage Category win had been secured by Martin Hunt
and James Galliver aboard their Frazer Nash. No strangers
to the podium, both Martin and James were delighted
