ALBUM REVIEW
London four piece prog rock
band, Another Sky is back with
their sophomore album, 'Beach
Day'.
Their debut album 'I Slept On
the Floor' received high praise
on its release back in 2020, so
'Beach Day' has a lot to live up
to. Thankfully, this is a band that
knows exactly what they are
doing when it comes to creating
great music.
Shining a spotlight on aspects of
our modern day existence is a
theme that runs right through
the album; for example, 'A
Feeling', with the line 'She
thinks she has facts, well I've got
a feeling." says it all about
today's attitude towards the
world around us.
"Uh-Oh" is an interesting one, it is
catchy but harrowing lyrically,
with
anger
and
frustration
seeming to manifest in what
sounds like a passively aggressive
line: "Don't fall in the Thames on
your way home.".
'I Never Had Control Anyway'
gives us a stunning vocal set
against rousing instrumentals,
creating a wall of sound that took
the focus of my ear from the lyrics
to the overall sound of the track,
which is pretty epic.
Catrin Vincent's vocals on the
album are incredible, with a
distinctive voice that is very much
at the heart of the Another Sky
sound. As a unit, the band sounds
so tight, with each element
complementing the next,
bouncing off each other in a
playful way. Like in the lead single
'Psychopath', you just know that
this will be a fun song to play, and
the band definitely put that
playful energy into the overall
sound, despite the subject of the
song being on the dark side.
'Beach Day' is an album that is
unafraid to tackle difficult issues
and crams a full range of human
emotions into it, from anger and
self
reflection
to
sadness,
frustration and an overwhelming
sense that we aren't really in
control of things. A complex
album that is easy to listen to is no
mean feat, but Another Sky has
managed to do just that. It is edgy
at times, but has no rough edges.
This is a real gem of an album.
