Resourcing an effective cyber defense
Getting proactive about defending your online assets is only ever a good thing. If you’ve identified and prioritised the assets that
require the highest levels of protection – even better! Once you’ve done that, the big question is how to tackle it.
The traditional approach has been to hire a CISO or an Information Security Manager, plus a team of security analysts, and
invest in a suite of cyber security products which they will manage. The problem with this approach is that it’s expensive – both
in terms of sourcing and hiring good people, and procuring and managing a set of technologies that is capable of responding to
the latest attacks.
The average annual salary for a CISO is over £100k, and the national average salary for an Information Security Manager is
£57,448 per year in the United Kingdom3. And that’s if you can find them and are an attractive enough proposition for them.
Demand for cyber security professionals has skyrocketed in recent years, and there is a significant cyber security skills gap –
meaning that individuals working in or applying for cyber roles often lack the particular skills needed to perform them. According
to recent research into the UK cyber security labour market carried out on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media &
Sport (DCMS), just less than half (48%) of all businesses have a basic technical cyber security skills gap.
Then there’s the cost of buying and managing the latest and greatest cyber security tools. A DIY approach can be incredibly
costly and simply isn’t viable for many smaller companies with constrained IT budgets. It also isn’t a one off deal, organisations
inevitably need to continually train team members, make new hires, buy new hardware and software, update it, and so on.

This is another reason why an increasing number of companies are opting for a managed cyber security service, because it
allows them to bypass these costs, while still giving them access to the latest technology and fully trained cyber experts.
Typically subscribers can expect to save between 60% and 70% of the cost of procuring and managing cyber security
solutions in-house.
