It is a quanti昀椀cation of the radiation dose delivered to a speci昀椀c area
of the patient’s body. It is typically measured in units of milligrays per
square centimetre (mGy·cm²) and is calculated by multiplying the dose
(in milligrays) by the area (in square centimetres) that the radiation
beam covers during the procedure. It provides a way to quantify
and record the amount of radiation a patient is exposed to during a
radiological examination, which is essential for assessing and managing
radiation risks and ensuring patient safety10 .
Discussion
Average DAP in gy-cm2 for FEVAR was recorded across all years of the
study, across 5 years for EVAR and across 4 out of 6 years for EVAS.
Comparison with other studies and clinical implications
RESULTS
Of a total of 3885 vascular procedures, 1070 aortic procedures were
eligible for inclusion. Of the 886 aortic cases performed in the posthybrid period, 539 took place in hybrid theatre while 369 procedures
were hosted in main theatres. The remaining 186 aortic cases took
place in traditional theatres in the pre-hybrid period.
While endovascular procedures were the most common treatment
approach across pre-hybrid main theatres and new hybrid theatres, the
proportion of endovascular procedures increased from 61% (pre-hybrid)
to 97% (new hybrid theatre) (p < 0.05). Open procedures shifted to
traditional theatres in the post-hybrid period with 94% (347) open, 5.5%
(20) endovascular and 0.5% (2) combined procedures. The proportion
of endovascular cases using complex grafts (TEVAR, FEVAR, BEVAR &
ChEVAR/ChEVAS) increased from 28.6% in pre-hybrid theatres to 40%
(212) in new hybrid theatres whereas post-hybrid main theatres only
hosted 1 complex endovascular procedure. Cases performed in posthybrid traditional theatres, new hybrid theatres and pre-hybrid main
theatres can be seen in 昀椀gure 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The proportion
of combined aortic procedures decreased from 4% in pre-hybrid main
theatres to 0-0.5% in post-hybrid theatres.
The average FEVAR DAP reduced by 46% from 403 to 233 Gy cm² (p
