Hospital planning to expand
maternity department
A hospital wants to extend a ward in its maternity department and
build an operating theatre.
Ward 26 is the main birthing facility at Leighton Hospital, Crewe, and
the department’s two operating theatres are said to be in need of
refurbishment.
Adding a third theatre would allow that work to happen and also help
meet demand from a growing local population, according to a planning
application.
Eight parking spaces would be lost but the recent main car park
extension could accommodate the “small” loss, it added.
The theatre suites were “no longer 昀椀t for modern use,” and need
“signi昀椀cant refurbishment works,” according to documents submitted
to Cheshire East Council on behalf of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS
Foundation Trust.
But because the maternity department is needed all year round, the
operating theatres cannot be closed.
The new theatre would initially be used as a “decant facility”
during the work but longer term would increase the capacity of the
department, stated the application.
The hospital wanted permission for a single-storey link extension
building, a modular operating theatre and waste hold with partial
second storey to provide a 昀椀rst 昀氀oor plant area.
The application was due to be determined by a planning of昀椀cer under
delegated authority.

Advanced airway management
in patients with a known
complex disease
Our latest investigation report makes four safety recommendations
to NHS England and the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Report summary
This investigation looks into patient safety issues associated with airway
management – the techniques used by healthcare professionals to help
patients to get enough oxygen into their lungs, for example during
surgery or a medical emergency. We focus on the potential safety risks
to people who may have a ‘dif昀椀cult airway’.
The report sets out the reference case of Ethan, a 12-year-old boy with
Hunter Syndrome (a genetic condition that often affects the anatomy
of the airway). He was admitted to the emergency department after
having a seizure at home. Attempts to intubate were made but were
not successful. Ethan suffered a cardiac arrest and sadly died.
Our 昀椀ndings, safety recommendations and safety observations aim to
help healthcare professionals quickly recognise whether someone has a
potentially dif昀椀cult airway and may need advanced airway management
techniques to keep their airway open.
