Celebrating 35 years of Surgical Holdings
This year marks the 35th anniversary of family run Surgical Holdings – a ISO 13485
accredited surgical instrument manufacturer and repairer based in heart of South-end.
The company’s passion for finely
crafted
surgical
instruments
started four generations ago
by George Poole, who created
his own business making finely
crafted surgical instruments back
in 1910. George’s commitment
to excellence remained in the
family as he ensured successive
generations were taught his
unique skills and saw the creation
of Surgical Holdings.
Today the award-winning company
is run by his son and Chairman,
Philip Coole, and grandson and
Managing Director, Dan Coole.
But who is Surgical Holdings and
what sets them apart from other
surgical
instrument
makers?
We visited the workshop to
see firsthand what makes the
company so unique.
Surgical Holdings specialises in
manufacturing and supplying
surgical instruments and medical
equipment. It offers a wide range
of products for various medical
specialties, including general
surgery, plastics, gynaecology,
orthopaedics, electrosurgery, and
ophthalmology.
It also produces and stocks
all common reusable surgical
instruments such as forceps,
scissors,
retractors,
needle
holders, and other precision
instrumentation used in surgical
procedures.
Another area the company has
evolved in over the years is the
distribution of complementary
specialised ranges, including
Hermann
laparoscopic
instruments, Bissinger Bipolar
Instruments, and the Symmetry
Surgical range including the
Bookwalter Retractor and Thomas
Codman Surgical Instrumentation
and heritage brands Malis and
Rhoton.
The intricate repair service
includes re-grinding, honing, resetting, welding, polishing, and
nitric acid passivation. All repairs
are carried out in their state-ofthe-art workshop by a team of
highly skilled and experienced
technicians, many of whom have
decades of experience within the
industry.
They are also working hard to
ensure this expertise is being
passed and there is a large focus
on education and apprenticeships
for the new generation of
instrument technicians.
Customer service is also high
on the agenda. The company
welcomes visitors to its friendly
Southend-on-Sea workshop and
encourages them to chat with
technicians.
A unique Duo Surface Finish
is also applied across all of its
general surgery theatre range of
instruments. This new finish has
been developed by looking at
what is important in a modernday surgical instrument and
has been designed to reduce
glare, enhance cleaning efficacy,
ensure corrosion resistance and a
smoother finish.
They have also introduced
Surgifix, an online surgical
instrument repair portal that is
exclusive to Surgical Holdings.
It allows customers to book in
and track their repairs and even
communicate directly with the
repair team to stay up to date
with the live progress of repairs.
Customers receive an industryleading 18 months warranty as
standard on instrument repairs,
with standard turnaround times
being 1 week, with express 2-day
service available to help keep
theatres running smoothly.
You don’t have to spend long
in the workshop or meet many
people to fully understand the
company’s culture. The team has
decades of experience working
within the industry and have
been trained to manufacture the
products, not just repair them.
What is beyond doubt is the
company strives for the best
possible quality in everything
they do, insisting on controlling
the quality of every item it
manufactures, from the materials
used to the rigorous procedures it
applies to testing.
Surgical Holdings cares immensely
about the work it does, never
forgetting that the instruments
they create, and repair, are
responsible for saving lives.
It is this unique blend of skill,
dedication and passion for quality
which elevates Surgical Holdings
above the competition allowing
the company to thrive for over
the last thirty-five years.

Another key service is their unique
surgical repair and maintenance
service developed to ensure the
longevity and performance of
surgical products. This one-of-a
kind service transforms broken,
damaged, and worn instruments
to an ‘as new’ condition giving
hospitals
a
quick,
quality
controlled
and
cost-efficient
service, without the costs and
delays associated with overseas
shipping.
