Automated CPD certification added
to Totum digital surgery platform
Medical have announced a new automation feature has been added
to their Totum digital surgery platform. Following receipt of RCS
accreditation in 2022, the platform now has an automated certification
feature that issues Royal College of Surgeon’s England Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) points for training time spent on the
Inovus simulators and the Totum platform.
Totum is now able to produce securely-signed CPD certificates based on
activity across the ecosystem of Inovus simulators and training activity
associated with the Totum digital surgery platform – whether it be live
or simulated surgical training. These certificates can be downloaded or
saved within the online learning platform for consideration by appraisal
teams and faculty.

Every hour of training time in Totum provides 1 CPD point. This
provision will allow trainee surgeons to work towards their annual
CPD requirements while developing and improving their practical
surgical skills and provides a compelling option for gaining CPD points
in addition to the traditional theory based options. The platform has a
wide range of simulated surgical procedures and includes the LapPass
tasks, validated by the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great
Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI) and used by the RCSE for their laparoscopic
skills training courses, meaning trainees can accrue CPD points while
working towards LapPass competency.
Dr David Rawaf, Clinical Excellence Lead at Inovus Medical said, “The
automation of CPD point accrual and certification while performing
hands on skills training is a paradigm shifting step forward for surgical
trainees all over the world. We are confident that this will encourage
trainees to spend more time developing their hands on motor skills
and surgical procedural skills. We are also excited to know that when
trainees attend courses that utilise Totum and the Inovus ecosystem
of simulators, they will earn CPD points for the hands-on training. As a
former surgical trainee, I understand the incredible value this brings.”
