Saudi Surgeon Saves Hand of 30-year-old from Amputation
Injured in work accident falling from 3 meters onto iron poles.
Riyadh - The orthopedic team at King Khalid Hospital and Prince Sultan Center for Health Care in Al-Kharj
(Central Saudi Arabia) prevented a 30-year-old’s hand from amputation after falling 3m high on reinforcing
bars.
The emergency took in the patient on 18 September, suffering from fractures in the right forearm and
昀椀ngertips, and cut in all the extensor tendons. He was taken instantly to the operation room after the clinical
examinations. During a two-hour surgery, surgeons reconnected the tendons extensions and muscles.
The patient moved to the admission department until he was able to move his hand again.

Nobel Prize winner
The Physiological Society congratulates
Katalin Karikówho and Drew Weissman for the
2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
It was announced on Monday 2 October that
Karikówho and Weissman have been jointly
awarded the Nobel Prize for their discoveries
concerning nucleoside base modi昀椀cations that
enabled the development of effective mRNA
vaccines against COVID-19.
Responding to the Nobel Prize announcement,
President of The Physiological Society,
Professor David Attwell, said:
“On behalf of The Physiological Society I
am delighted to congratulate Karikówho
and Weissman for being jointly awarded the
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Their
pioneering research into nucleoside base
modi昀椀cations forged the path for the lifesaving mRNA vaccines that were rolled out
worldwide to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Physiology helps us to understand how the
body works in health and determine what goes
wrong in disease. As such, physiology has been
at the forefront of the search for answers
at every stage of the COVID-19 pandemic,
including the development of mRNA vaccines.”
