21cm (w) x 29cm (h)
Mounted on card
Rosie James is a Medway based textile artist whose work explores the use of the sewing
machine as a tool for drawing. Her focus concentrates mainly on people and people watching,
she loves to explore the individual within the crowd. Rosie’s work encompasses screenprinting and appliqué creating large-scale mixed media artworks for hotels and homes all
over the world.
This artwork piece for the auction is one of a series of studies of people sewing. The title “The
Song of the Shirt” comes from a 1970’s film which looked at the hard lives of those who make
clothes, in sweatshops and factories today or back in the Victorian era, sewing by candlelight.
It is stitched in purple thread on white cotton and mounted on card.
Rosie is also a volunteer with Heart of Kent Hospice Living Well group leading arts and crafts
sessions for patients and carers.
