Poetry Ireland and the
National Library of Ireland
welcomed University College
Cork as a new partner for
Poetry Aloud, the annual
poetry speaking competition
for post-primary schools, in
a new 10-year agreement.
The only competition of its kind
in Ireland, students participating
in Poetry Aloud commit poems to
memory and then speak the poems
aloud at heats, regional finals and at
a national final that takes place each
December at the National Library of
Ireland.

This year’s competition drew over
1,700 entries from 143 schools
nationwide, with a significant
increase in participation by Munster
schools this year. Twenty-one heats
were held across all four provinces.
The judging panel for the Poetry
Aloud Final at the National Library
of Ireland in December included
Catherine Heaney and John
FitzGerald of UCC.
Majella Votta of Mercy Mounthawk,
Traleee was chosen as Poetry Aloud
2018’s overall winner and received the
Seamus Heaney Poetry Aloud Award.
