Poetry Ireland’s Jane O’Hanlon is
the arts education advisor to the
Department of Education & Skills
STEM Implementation Group,
part of which includes chairing the
STEAM Advisory Group. Jane’s
presentations this year included
a joint presentation at the IRSCL
CONGRESS in Stockholm in August
on Irish Children’s Literature along
with Little Island, Marino Institute of
Education & Storytellers of Ireland,
and was made possible with support
from Culture Ireland.
Jane is also part of a consultative
partnership with the Junior Cycle
English and Gaeilge Teams on the
teaching of poetry in the classroom,
and is currently exploring innovative
models of CPD for teachers at Junior
Cycle involved in Arts in Education
initiatives across the curriculum.
The winners and runners up
in this year’s Poetry Aloud
Poetry Aloud
The only competition of its kind in
Ireland, Poetry Aloud is presented
by Poetry Ireland and the National
Library of Ireland, and its associate
partner University College Cork.
Students commit poems to memory
and then speak the poems aloud at
heats, regional finals and at a national
final that takes place each December
at the National Library of Ireland.
This year’s competition drew
more than 1,700 entries from
143 schools across the island of
Ireland. 17 heats were held across
all four provinces. The overall
winner of this year’s competition
was Ellie Reynolds, Lismore
Comprehensive School, Co Armagh.
