Application to Higher Education
An introduction to Higher Education
THE PAST
How do I apply to university?
In the 1960s, approximately 5% of school leavers went to university.
You need to apply through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) using the online
application system at: www.ucas.com/apply.
THE PRESENT
Today, this figure is 50%. Britain needs more people with degrees and more skilled workers.
Timeline of events and your action plan
THE FUTURE
You will need to start thinking about the application up to 18 months before your intended
university start date. See the timeline diagram below and use it as your ‘action plan’.
Employment forecasts show that 80% of new jobs will require people to have the education
and skills that Higher Education offers.
MONTH
A degree in any subject is now an entry point for a large number of jobs.
