During STEM Club students have also been developing their team
work and presenting skills. They have been writing debates to discuss
if flying should be banned to help the fight against global warming and
then presented these to the rest of the group.
Students have also given presentations on their STEM heroes. Their
heroes have included a range of notable people in STEM including
well known scientists such as Alexander Fleming who discovered
penicillin, Professor Sarah Gilbert who developed a covid-19 vaccine
and not forgetting our very own chemistry teacher, Mr Jones, who has
inspired many a student to pursue a career in Science!
Year 7 have also been developing their technology skills this term.
They have made a buzzer steady hand game using a range of
materials and built and tested their own ping-pong ball launchers.
This involved students taking on the role of electrical engineers. They
wired a battery to a motor in order to spin a wheel which then
launched the ball – this was a big hit with the students!
In STEM, we have done many things: posters,
model making, ping-pong ball launchers and
chemical experiments. All of these activities have
been fun. But throughout this term in STEM, I
have learnt one thing in particular, to try again
even after failure. That is how I have ended up
succeeding to make a ping-pong ball
launcher and a battery from coins.

I have really enjoyed STEM but
my favourite project was making
the buzzer game. I really enjoyed
drilling and testing the buzzer.
