Students win heart stopping prizes!
With the Netflix rom-com Heartstopper a hot topic at QPHS, we
decided to give our students the chance to win a set of the books
that inspired the show. Alice Oseman’s graphic novel
‘Heartstopper’ tells the story of Nick and Charlie, two teenage boys
who are in the process of finding themselves – and each other.
The unfolding story encompasses questions about sexuality,
identity, and growing up, and it has won readers’ hearts with its
gentle and affirming message.
To win copies of the books, students were asked to write a 250
word review of the best book that they had read recently, either
fiction or non-fiction, with results being chosen by a panel of
judges from the English department. The response was
phenomenal, with students crafting reviews that revealed a
thoughtful and often sophisticated understanding of literature.
Reviews explored a wide range of texts, from contemporary YA
fiction like ‘Cinderella Is Dead’, to adult literary fiction (‘The Seven
Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’) and classic literature such as ‘The
Catcher In The Rye’.
We look forward to running future competitions which offer
students the chance to get their hands on more brilliant books.
Well done to everyone who took part!
We were blown away with the quality of
writing from all entrants, as well as the effort
and care that had been taken in crafting each
entry. Our three winners – Evie M in Year 9,
Alice H in Year 10, and Lucy M in Year 11 –
created exemplary responses which thoroughly
deserved recognition and reward.
