The students were a great credit to
the school, and it was lovely to see
them so excited. This must be the
very best way to finish my career as
a librarian at QPHS. For the 5 years
I have been taking the BLT club,
Tuesdays have been the highlight of
my week in school. So sad to be
going but I have insisted Mrs
Melhuish-Jones invites me to the
future events when she takes over in
the library in September. I know she
will be as enthusiastic as myself and
bring a lot of ideas to the table!

CHESHIRE BOOK AWARDS
Book Loving students win county competition
Students from ‘Book Lovers Tuesday’
club received a special invitation to
attend the library awards evening
hosted by the Winsford Academy.
Book Loving Tuesday (BLT) is one of
our popular enrichment options chosen
by Key Stage 3 students which takes
place each week after school in the
library at Queen’s Park and is led by
librarian, Mrs Irvine and Mrs MelhuishJones.
The Cheshire School Book Awards are
held annually and this was the first live
event since COVID, so our students
were very excited to attend.
Over the course of the year students
across Cheshire read a range of books
from the Book Awards shortlist and
placed their votes accordingly.
On Wednesday 29th June nine
students travelled to Winsford on a
very wet evening to join the celebratory
event.
The students gathered with other
schools from across Cheshire, excited
to hear which authors would be
announced as the winners.
In the younger age group the winner
was, When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle
and the runner up was Girl (in real life)
by Tamsin Winter. In the older
group the winner was The Outrage
by William Hussey and the runner
up was George Lester's book, Boy
Queen.
Students were delighted to meet two of
the authors who spoke at the event Tamsin and George gave brilliant and
inspiring talks on their lives as authors,
George especially had the room
buzzing with his wit and charm.
In the run up to this event, students
across the county were asked to enter
a Book Review competition about the
shortlisted books. We are thrilled to
announce, that two students from
Queen’s Park High School were
revealed as the winners of this
competition: Lydia S in Year 7 won
‘Best review’ in the 5 books nominated
in the younger age group category and
Gloria K in Year 8 was revealed as the
runner up in the older category.
Congratulations to both students!
During the evening, students had the
opportunity to hear from a number of
established children's authors who
talked about their writing experiences
and as an added bonus they received
their own signed copies of their
favourite author’s books! Some were
We hope our success at this
event will inspire students to
read more and be encouraged
to become involved in the
exciting literacy initiatives we
have here in school. We are
already looking forward to the
next book awards next year
and wonder what books will
make the shortlist!
