BELATED JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
‘The Best of British’
As this year’s Platinum Jubilee
celebrations took place in the school
holidays, the visual arts and design
technology department took the
opportunity during enrichment week
to relive this momentous event and
delivered a series of workshops
based around British culture.
Year 8 students spent a day moving
through a carousel of vibrant
activities to celebrate the ‘Best of
British’!
In Food Technology, the focus was
on the traditional British cream tea
and students learned how to make
and bake scones, which they later
devoured with butter, jam and
cream! In art and design students
created jubilee cake boxes based on
Jamie Reid’s artwork for the Sex
Pistols, ‘God Save The Queen. The
boxes were designed and
constructed from nets before being
decorated with a collage of paint and
iconic British images. Red, white and
blue hanging decorations and paper
chandeliers were made through
group work and displayed in the
sculpture garden. In technology
students looked at traditional British
games before creating their own
wooden spinning tops with different
optical effects.
In conjunction with the jubilee
celebrations, Queen’s Park High
School wanted to go one extra step
and support The Queen’s Green
Canopy (QGC). This project devised
by HRH The Prince of Wales is a
unique tree planting initiative created
to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum
Jubilee in 2022 inviting people from
across the United Kingdom to “Plant
a Tree for the Jubilee”. With a focus
on planting sustainably, the QGC
encourages the planting of trees to
create a legacy in honour of The
Queen’s leadership of the Nation,
which will benefit future generations.
As Mrs Irvine, Library Manager was
also keen to leave her own lasting
legacy as she was retiring this year,
with a group of her Book Loving
Tuesday enrichment group, they
chose a spot in the sculpture garden
to plant what will grow to be a
beautiful apple tree enhancing the
school environment for future
generations of Queen’s Park
students to enjoy.
A big thank you to Wayne for
creating the bespoke
commemorative plaque to mark the
occasion, which is will be placed
next to the tree along with handpainted union jack coloured pebbles
by our BLT students.
