WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?
When the whole country went into lockdown in March, so did the prisons! The regime at HMP
Humber was restricted to allow time out of cell only for showers, exercise and collecting meals
and medication so I couldn’t deliver any group or 1:1 sessions! I was asked to provide some
administrative support to Safer Custody, produce an informative and uplifting newsletter and
produce and distribute distraction materials for men. I have worked with the Safer Custody
team for the last 3.5 years so they welcomed the extra support with open arms! Thankfully
things remained stable and in fact most men coped well with the restricted regime and the
distraction materials we provided helped a lot of men occupy their time.
Since June I have been able to see men again 1:1 and this has allowed me to
start RJ work again, take new referrals, and to help community practitioners
progress their cases and for victims and offenders to get some outcomes!! In
the last 10 weeks some really positive letters have been written and
exchanged between men at Humber and their victims, and we have even
been able to use Zoom to facilitate preparation sessions with community
practitioners and men, as well as holding a direct meeting with the
victim of an offence. A second direct meeting for another case is scheduled for this
month so I think video call meetings will be here to stay for the foreseeable future!
LOCKDOWN STATS
17 RJ referrals received since the start of lockdown! Resulting in 2 shuttle messages achieved, 6
currently open cases, 2 agreements to complete Victim Awareness sessions in Humberside on
release and 2 agreements to engage in RJ in the community due to imminent release.
