How to Promote British Values
in Your Setting
Since 2014, British Values have been embedded in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Promoting British values in Early Years settings helps children to understand the values that
underpin British society. They are essential for creating a cohesive and tolerant society, and
important in helping children to develop into responsible adults.
Democracy
Democracy means that everyone has a say in how things are done. Early Years settings can promote
democracy by giving children opportunities to make choices, such as what to play with or what to
eat for snack. They can also be involved in making decisions such as how to decorate the setting or
what rules to have. Settings should encourage and explain to children about the importance of
sharing, taking turns and respecting other's opinions.
Rule of Law
Rule of law means that everyone is subject to the same laws, regardless of their background or
beliefs. Early Years settings can promote the rule of law by teaching children about laws and how
they protect us, as well as by incorporating rules in the setting. Children should understand what is
right and wrong, and that everyone is responsible for their own actions.
Individual Liberty
Individual liberty means that everyone has the right to freedom of speech, thought, and religion.
Early Years settings can promote individual liberty by creating an environment where children feel
safe to express themselves and their ideas. They should also teach children about the importance
of respecting the rights of others.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Mutual respect and tolerance means that we should treat each other with respect, regardless of
beliefs or backgrounds. Early Years settings can promote mutual respect and tolerance by creating
a diverse and inclusive environment where all children feel welcome and valued. Settings should
celebrate cultural diversity, festivals for different beliefs and every child's unique qualities.
