FEATURING KIM
My name is Kim, and I am one of the tutors at Showcase Training. When
applying for the position of a tutor I had 30 years’ experience of working
in the early years sector but no qualifications for tutoring. It was a big
decision for me to step away from practice and working hands-on with
the children but I wanted to extend my knowledge and develop my skills,
so tutoring was a good next step.
Showcase Training supported me to gain my Certificate in Assessing
Vocational Achievement (CAVA) and I completed this within 6 months of
starting my role. Alongside this, I also had to achieve my Functional
Skills in English and maths, and going through the process of studying
and sitting the Functional Skills exams has helped me to understand the
process and be able to support my learners better.
To support my development, Showcase Training ensured that I received
lots of on-the-job training, observing other tutors in their role, and I was
also assigned a second-line assessor to ensure that my marking was up
to the standard expected. I have now been in the role for 18 months and
feel that the decision to change the direction of my career was a great
decision. I am now settled in my role and continuing to develop my skills
as a tutor using the support of my colleagues, standardisation meetings,
and 1-2-1 meetings with my line manager.
