SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY
Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) provides input through ongoing
assessments for expressive and receptive communication as well as eating,
drinking and swallowing assessments to ensure input provided is meeting the
current needs of the individual. Speech and language therapy is provided
through 1:1 sessions and group therapy input. Interventions are provided both
directly and indirectly for the individual.

Sensory Journey - this group follows a sequence of activities that
allows individuals to investigate through taste, smell, touch, sight,
hearing and movement whilst using a Total Communication approach
to promote individuals understanding and communication skills
allowing choice making, commenting, responding and interaction with
peers further developing their social communication skills
Alternative and Augmentative communication input
Communication aids assessment and provision
Social communication groups
Lego Therapy - this is a social communication group that also works
in collaboration with the Occupational Therapy (OT) team to develop
social interaction skills such as eye contact, using person’s name and
turn taking as well as focusing on OT goals such as increasing
bilateral use of hands and fine motor skills. The SLT focus also looks
to develop functional communication skills for team working and
achieving a common goal including giving and following instructions,
clarifying and modifying information and directing communication to
the appropriate person as well as developing skills to adopt and adapt
to different roles and responsibilities within a team
Staff training- training for staff teams are also included covering a
range of topics including colourful semantics, intensive interaction,
Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), Communication
aids and dysphagia. This training is not a complete list and further
training is provided dependent upon individual’s clinical need.
Speech and Language Therapy work across ·the academic and
residential settings as well as working as part of the wider multidisciplinary teams and colleagues in our external services such as
tertiary communication aid services to explore implementation of high
tech devices, local hospitals and dietician teams

SnackChat Group - a food preparation group which
is run jointly with the Occupational Therapy team. The
aim of this group is to promote functional performance
in food preparation tasks, making choices and team
working
Care Plans - the development, implementation and
review of care plans and protocols for staff teams to
support individual’s communication and dysphagia
needs
1:1 individual sessions - these are designed around
developing the individual’s skills for communication
aid use both low and high tech, development of
language programmes and ensuring guidance is in
place to support a safe and enjoyable mealtime
