TOURISM & LEISURE
Low Wood Bay Hotel – Lake District National Park
Stephenson Halliday worked closely with architects Mason Gillibrand in preparing a masterplan and
detailed landscape concept proposals for the extension of hotel and leisure facilities at Low Wood Bay.
Set within the Lake District National Park, the key focus was to sensitively assimilate the proposals into
the surrounding landscape. The proposals entailed the design of the external areas surrounding the new
buildings and access road including the bedroom accommodation, atrium and multi-use sport pitch as
well as the re-design of other existing areas such as the hotel frontage and new outdoor spa.
Walker Barn Quarry – Macclesfield
Stephenson Halliday was commissioned to
prepare a landscape masterplan and undertake
an LVIA for a tourism development within a former
quarry on the boundary with the Peak District
National Park. Landscape analysis was provided
to determine the extent to which the former
quarry could be backfilled with inert waste before
the construction of timber lodges and associated
leisure facilities. Visual analysis was provided from
sensitive locations with the adjoining national
park and sections were provided to demonstrate
the visual impacts of the proposed development.
Terrain modelling was undertaken to determine
the cut and fill balance necessary to achieve
design levels within the quarry.
