What about other generation options to maximise the use of the grid connection?
Potentially in combination with re-powering or time extensions above, there may be viable opportunities
to install solar panels on land released from the wind farm (for example if fewer, taller turbines reduce the
extent of the development), on additional adjacent land or potentially as an alternative generation source
across the whole development area following decommissioning. Much will depend on site location and new
lease arrangements, but this may enhance economics if extant connection infrastructure can be used.
Can decommissioning provide a value opportunity?
Most permissions are likely to require removal of turbines but otherwise expected to allow for leaving tracks
and turbine bases in situ. Developers are though advised to evaluate their permissions carefully to ensure
that no further specific consideration of decommissioning options is required and to allow careful control of
site closure costs. Depending on land ownership and control circumstances there may also be opportunities
to utilise sites for Biodiversity Net Gain. This may be particularly appropriate if mitigation for a nearby new
site may be better delivered by decommission and habitat enhancement.
Stephenson Halliday have extensive experience securing consents for new, time extended and re-powered
wind farm sites throughout the UK and in Ireland. If you are considering your options for an older wind
farm permission then talk to us about how some of the following services may help shape effective decision
• High level planning policy and local planning decision making history in respect of wind energy to inform the extent to
which options may be supported by policy.
• Support for direct engagement with the Local Planning Authority and relevant stakeholders and consultees to discuss
• Completion of Feasibility Studies to understand the Landscape and Visual Impacts of increased tip heights and provide
design advice in relation to the optimal ‘new’ site layout taking into consideration any grid capacity constraints.
