Once you have established a crop,
mitigating against the damage of
CSFB larvae is another challenge.
Applications of insecticides must be
accurately timed to hit the target pest
and once they have migrated into
the leaf petioles, chemical control
is difficult. Pyrethroids are contact
insecticides and recent trial work has
shown little efficacy at larvae timings.
WHEN TO SPRAY FOR CSFB
Target plant populations are important to maintain.
Emergence to cotyledon stage: If significant
seedling loss is occurring, spray immediately,
especially if the field has poor seedbed and
emergence is sporadic.
If the crop is uniform and reaches target
populations only spray if damage thresholds
are reached:
1-2 leaf stage 25% leaf area damage
3-4 leaf stage 50% leaf area damage
CSFB are more active at night, suggesting that
night spraying may be beneficial (50 mls application)
– currently being investigated.
In 2019 CSFB populations had on
average 60% resistance, a large
increase over tested samples in
2018. If application is necessary
please follow the guideline
bearing in mind that beneficials
can take up to 21 days to recover
in the crop after applications.
• Always use the most effective
pyrethroids available as the first
point of action
• Always use the full label rate
specified for the target pest
• Use an application technique
to optimise the targeting and
performance of the insecticide
• Monitor pest numbers before
and after application
• If pests are still active after
treatment due to resistance,
STOP.
Making another application of
any pyrethroid, even at higher
rates or in mix, is unlikely to offer
any better control of resistant
populations – and could make
matters worse by removing
beneficial insects.
