3 FARMING SYSTEMS:
CONVENTIONAL: Based on good
agricultural practice e.g. inversion
tillage with winter and spring crops
SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM 1: Based on
non-inversion practices, including
catch and cover crops
SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS 2: Based
on a more direct drill approach,
including catch and cover crops

Results from the second year
across both sites are continuing to
show similar trends to the first year
results from Loddington. 2019 saw
a different growing season to 2018
with an outcome of improved yields.
On the lighter soils of East Lenham
slightly higher yields and bigger
savings on operational costs saw
margins higher than on the heavy
land at Loddington but both sites
showed the sustainable system 2
being the most profitable at this
stage in the project.
EARTHWORM POPULATIONS
Earthworms play an essential role in the soil ecosystem to recycle and
incorporate organic matter as well as enhance structure. They are an
important indicator of relative soil health, with higher numbers indicating a
more friable texture.
Results from the second year from Loddington and East Lenham has given
us some great insights from the 3 different systems. The 2 sites have very
different soil types but many results are showing very similar trends.

“Conservation Agriculture
may provide us with a
chance to reduce costs,
improve soil health and
develop a sustainable
farming system to
improve farm profitability,
whilst supporting wider
biodiversity and protecting
natural resources.”
