Twomey leads Irish
domination with victory
in Switzerland
RISH riders dominated the line-up
of the “Golden Drum of Basel” 1.50m
jump-off class at the five-star Swiss
show in Basel on Saturday, January 12,
where Cork’s Billy Twomey scored a
superb win with the Sue Davies-owned
‘Lady Lou’.
Three of the seven combinations who
made it into the jump-off were from
Ireland, and Twomey’s clear against the
clock in 44.08 seconds with ‘Lady Lou’,
would see him take the winner’s prize of
Louise Hamil,
Benwitched.

VICTORIOUS: Billy Twomey holds the
Golden Drum of Basel Trophy aloft after
victory with ‘Lady Lou’. (FW03-504NN)
A thrilling 14-horse jump-off saw just
over a second separate the top five at
the finish, with Allen and ‘Molly Malone’
stopping the clock clear in 37.86 seconds
to collect 14,000 Swiss Franc. Tipperary’s
Denis Lynch (‘The Sinner’) and Billy
Twomey (‘Kimba Flamenco’) also made
it into the jump-off and finished just
outside the top 10.
The top prize of 50,000 Swiss Franc went
to in-form Belgian rider Niels Bruynseels
with ‘Delux van T & L’ after they clocked
the winning time of 36.81.
CLUBS affiliated to the Association of Irish Riding Clubs
(AIRC) can now apply to represent Ireland in a World
Club Team Show Jumping Tournament at the Generali
Open de France, one of the biggest equestrian events in
the world, in July.
This famous meeting takes place every summer at the
Parc Equestre Federal, 41600 Lamotte Beuvron, France
and will run this year from July 23 to 25. Lamotte Beuvron
is in the Loire Valley, about 140km south of Paris.
The main purpose of this tournament is to create a
friendly event, in which all members will meet riders from
around the world and share their equestrian culture.
Each team of three or four riders compete in two show
jumping rounds and a final. The competition will be run
over two days: two rounds and a final. The final is reserved
for the five best teams after the first two rounds. Each
rider has to participate with the same horse throughout
the competition.
The Federation Francaise d’Equitation (FFE) helps
teams who want to participate in The Generali World
Club Tournament to find their accommodation and the
horse rental for teams who need it. It is envisaged that
team members will hire horses for this event due to the
distance and cost of transportation, but it is possible to
bring your own.
The Association of Irish Riding Clubs is seeking
expressions of interest (F91/16) from interested clubs
in representing the Association and Ireland at this
tournament. Team members must be of intermediate
and/ or advanced intermediate level in show jumping.
Interested clubs must return their expression of interest
form (F91/16) to National Office by Friday, March 1.
Contact David Abbott at National Office for more details.
