Herefords shine in online show
T
HE traditional calf show was
not an option for any breeds
in 2020 so the Hereford
Breeders’ Association chose
to go virtual to showcase
the quality and potential of the
Hereford young stock in Northern
Ireland.
There were 40 entries put before
a very experienced judging panel
of ve judges from across the
globe. PJ Budler, who lives in Fort
Worth, Texas, and Stewart Robbie,
from New Zealand, joined John
Appelbe from County Cork, Helen
Morgan from Wales and, a little
closer to home, Alan Morrison from
Maguiresbridge, to run an expert
eye over the stock presented.
Leading the way was a very strong
class of 2019 spring born heifers and
it was the March born Intelagri 1
Lancômbe Jag Lucy from Alan Shaw,
Benburb, who took the honours in
the class and ultimately went on
to take Female Champion. Much
admired and purchased at the
Gouldingpoll opportunities sale,
she has grown on well since. Sired
by the well-bred Fisher 1 Jaguar,
she will no doubt prove a useful
addition to Alan’s herd.

and to Reserve Female Champion
was Broughan Holly from Shane
Curry, Armagh. By homebred bull
Broughan Dyno, she impressed the
judges well to take second place.
Class 2 Autumn Born heifer
was taken by John and William
McMordie, Ballygowan, with the
smart looking Solpoll 1 Starlet T4
and Class 3 was claimed by the
stylish Umgola Sabrina 3rd from
Stephen Baxter, Armagh.
In the Bulls section, the Champion
Male came from the youngest class.
It was Benaughlin Fortune 2nd
from William and John Burleigh,
Kinawley. Sired by stock bull
Moyclare Norman, purchased from

Holly, owned by Shane Curry.
the well renowned herd of Michael
Molloy, County Offaly, this calf
could have a strong sire potential
should he continue to mature as he
has to date.
The Reserve male was the class
winner of arguably the strongest
class of bulls of the show. Solpoll 1
Top Gun, born August 2019, is the
son of Solpoll Perfection, Champion
and top priced bull at the Hereford
spring show and sale 2019. From
John and William McMordie, they
certainly will feel this bull has a
bright future ahead.
Class 5 was also another win
for the McMordies as Solpoll 1
Trailblazer picked up the accolades
in this class.
Thanks again go to sponsor United
Feeds for its continued support
of the calf show, now into the 8th
year as sponsor. Thanks also go to
the judging panel for taking time to
carry out their duties and to all who
entered the competition.
Next sale of pedigree Herefords
will be on Tuesday, February 9, at
Dungannon Farmers’ Mart at noon.
