32 FARM WEEK
PEDIGREE CALF FAIR BEEF NI BEEF EXPO 2017
NOVEMBER 23 2017
Bringing down the curtain on
pedigree shows at Kings Hall
T
HE most eagerly awaited show of the
year took place on Saturday when
competitors travelled from across the
breadth of Northern Ireland to take
part in the prestigious Pedigree Calf
Fair @ Beef Expo NI.
This
exciting
event
also
attracted
competitors from as far away as County
Donegal and Limerick to take part in the Young
Showmanship classes.
The venue at the old Balmoral Showgrounds
alongside the Kings Hall in Belfast has seen
many great cattle exhibitions over the last 121
years, so what a befitting way to end an era of
pedigree events.
David Connolly, Chairman of the show, said
“It’s a bitter sweet experience putting on the
show at the old grounds for what we believe
will be the last pedigree beef show. I’ve talked
to many of the exhibitors and visitors today,
and they all have a favourite memory of
showing here.
“There are many delighted exhibitors who
have added a final memory of showing here. But
we are realistic too, and know that times move
on. We look forward to new opportunities and
building on the success of the last three years.”
Indeed, this was a theme of discussion
for many of those attending the show, with
stories of old breeding standards, the arrival
of the ‘continentals’ and how genetics
have progressed and improved, as well as
improvements in the support services for the
industry.
The premier sponsors for the show,
BovipastRSP, HVS Liquid Gold, Topstock, Bank
of Ireland UK and Gormley Motors were also
centre stage for the day, providing extremely
beneficial advice and support.
David said “We are indebted to the Northern
Ireland companies who continue to support
developments and improvements for the
beef industry here in Northern Ireland, and
we simply wouldn’t have a show without the
support of sponsors and also our trade stands.”
The challenging summer months and
hardship for harvesting were also of much
discussion during the show, but those adverse
conditions did not reflect on the standard of
cattle presented on the day. The ten judges had
nothing but praise for the quality of pedigree
animals on show and most judges actually said
that the standard was that high it made their
jobs harder to place their winners.
David Connolly then turned his thoughts
to PCF 2018 by saying that “We have a real
opportunity to build on the platform of the
first incredible three years by bringing calves,
show rings and sponsors all under one roof,
which can only lead to an even bigger and
better atmosphere and spectacular experience
for all.”
