Aine shines on debut at Ardnacashel
T
HE stage was set last Wednesday night
at Ardnacashel Equestrian, the arena
was levelled, the course was built, and
the kettle was on making ready a warm
welcome for all.
While we are all the star of our own show and
the hero of our own fable, the limelight on this
evening must be given to a particular young lady,
Aine Harwood. Would Aine please step up and
take a bow. For Aine this was her first ever show
and she finished in style by winning the 70cm
class.
Living in Killinchy and more accustomed to
ships’ sails than ponies’ tails, Aine started to go to
riding lessons becoming the lone horsey soldier
of the family. When her neighbour Shayne Darnley
broke her leg at the start of the summer and
needed some help with her pony, she immediately
thought of Aine. That is how Aine met Bandit.
Bandit lives in the field with his partner in

crime Selby the Shetland, who it will not surprise
anyone to learn is most definitely the boss!
Having spent a few months working hard and
getting to know Bandit, Aine was encouraged
by Shayne to go to a show. At this stage Aine
contacted Ardnacashel Equestrian, stating
that she was “blown away by how helpful and
encouraging they were”. So, the support crew
rallied, Dad Rick volunteered to be the driver,
as this meant he was far enough away that he
wouldn’t have to touch the horse.
Rick’s partner Ursela Henderson was more
hands on as she has experience with horses,
helping Aine in the warm-up. All the hard work
was worth it as Aine and Bandit sailed round and
had a wonderful time. Lots of carrots and polos
were on the shopping list this week.
Ardnacashel Equestrian prides itself on
providing a friendly and supportive atmosphere
where people can feel comfortable to come along
and have a go. The #bekind is bandied about and
anti-bullying initiatives talked about but we have
all experienced that feeling of being laughed at or
whispered about at a show.
Thankfully this is happening less and less. Here
at Ardnacashel Equestrian our mission statement
is equestrians support equestrians, of all ages,
abilities and disciplines.
Other competitors there that evening enjoying
the welcoming atmosphere were Jorja Dickson
and Wesley Cole, who both jumped clear in the
x-pole class, while late entry Rachel Adams won
the 80cm class, followed in second by regular
attendee Vicki Truesdale.
The highly talented Emma Jackson cleaned up
in the 90cm class taking first and second place.
Then Chloe Lister-Tinley dominated the 1m and
1.10m on her own Ruby.
