Horse racing set to
return next month
H
ORSE racing is set to return next month - albeit
behind closed doors. British racing returns on
the all-weather on June 1 at Newcastle, while
Irish racing is scheduled to resume on June 8
with a meeting at Naas. The Curragh will host the
Irish 2,000gns on June 12, with the 1,000gns staged the
following day on June 13.
Royal Ascot is due to start with the opening session on
June 16 and the Irish Derby on June 27 - just a week prior
to the English Derby and Oaks at Epsom. The majority of
Group races in Ireland have maintained their usual dates,
including the Irish Oaks on July 18. All Irish classics will
have reduced prize money.
The Guinness Galway Hurdle and the Tote.com Galway
Plate are set to go ahead at a seven-day (again behind
closed doors) festival starting July 27. The rst two days
and concluding two days will be restricted to at races at
the festival.
The local scene sees Down Royal granted a xture on
Friday, July 24 on the initial revised xture list covering
June and July issued by Horse Racing Ireland.

HRI Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh said: “2020 will be
anything but a normal year, but in the circumstances we
have tried to preserve the opportunities which the Irish
race programme offers to the better horse.”
Horse Racing Ireland has published comprehensive
details of the strict protocols that will be in place with
racing behind closed doors.
AS from today (Thursday, May
28), the cross-country course will
be open seven days per week
at Moira Equestrian Centre. The
Irish Horseracing Regulatory
Board (IHRB) COVID-19
RESTRICTIONS WIILL APPLY for clarification, these can be
found on the Irish Horseracing
Regulatory Board website: www.
ihrb.ie.
Under Government COVID-19
guidance directive, bookings will
be ONE HOUR slots only, with
a maximum of six horses per
slot and you must leave once
your specified slot is completed.
No-one can gain access to
the car park until the previous
booking has vacated.
Sanitizing stations are provided
at the entrance gate, the booking
in hut and the toilet area.
Furthermore, even if you meet
the above criteria, but show
symptoms of cough, cold,
temperature or shortness of
breath, DO NOT ATTEND.
